In my examples, I included the Argentinian horror movie Terrified, which is basically Jump Scares: The Movie - and it’s damn good at being just that. I wrote a CineFix script called The Art of the Jump Scare that became a superb video essay on why jump scares deserve more respect.

Stars: Hannah Gonera, Frances Sholto-Douglas, Mila Rayne. You can now watch this lost film as part of Shudder's praise-worthy catalog that continues to not only offer its users mounting options, but preserve horror history as a service. Maury and Bustillo made a splash with the sensationally savage French Extremism film Inside, while Livid favors more fantasy elements than pitch-black violence. Thanks to Shudder, Livid is accessible to stateside audiences after too long a vanishing act.

Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s grim-as-hell fairy tale Livid made waves across film festivals in 2011, but never saw its planned US release thanks to problems at Dimension Films (who acquired the movie for distribution). Stars: Chloé Coulloud, Félix Moati, Jérémy Kapone.Director: Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury.Religion plays host to demons of authority who prey on the weak, as Clarke not only makes a statement about theological corruption, but delivers nerve-pricking scares as well. What they find is bleeding statues and a host of other unholy occurrences, all recorded on early-era recording devices. Aislinn Clarke’s Irish found footage thriller takes place in the 1960s, with Vatican agents investigating a home for fallen women. What I love about The Devil’s Doorway is how it uses a horror subgenre known for technological advancement - found footage’s evolution from fuzzy VHS onto cell phones and the internet - and winds the clock backward. Stars: Lalor Roddy, Ciaran Flynn, Helena Bereen, Lauren Coe.
